This week’s #FridayFind is a 19th-century scandal!

You are looking at the baptismal record of Julius Henry Vollmer. The notation seen under the parents’ information reads “filius illegit Henrietta Hensing nuno uxoris Volmer” or “the illegitimate son of Henrietta Vollmer (nee Hensing).” During the 19th century, a notation like this was included in the records to “shame” the woman, by documenting her sin in the church record.
