Beyond the Community Attic
Two 90-Minute Workshops for Small Museums and Archives
Many organizations find themselves with materials they neither want nor need—items accepted without clear purpose that now clutter their collections, like an attic full of forgotten odds and ends. So, how do you address this challenge?
This two-part workshop series provides actionable strategies to help small museums and archives reclaim control of their collections, align with their mission, and create room for growth. To ensure in-depth discussion and meaningful engagement, each virtual session is limited to ten participants.
These workshops are at capacity, you can join the waitlist here to be notified when this workshop is offered again later this year.
Part 1: Going Forward – Controlling What Comes In
This workshop focuses on managing incoming materials to ensure they align with your institution’s mission and policies. Learn how to confidently accept only the materials that support your goals—and just as importantly, develop the tools and confidence to decline items that don’t fit.
Before the workshop, we’ll send out a questionnaire via email. If you’d like, you can also share your mission statement or collection development policy for group discussion.
Led by Kris Runberg Smith, Ph.D.
Part 2: Weeding Your Current Collection Wisely
This session will guide you through evaluating your existing collection with an eye toward your institution’s evolving priorities. You’ll learn practical steps for responsibly deaccessioning materials that no longer serve your mission.
As a group, we’ll review deaccession policies and work through strategies for removing items that don’t align with your organization’s goals. Before the workshop, we’ll send a questionnaire to learn more about your institution’s unique challenges and offer an opportunity to share your deaccession policy for discussion.
